1 The American Revolution Eddy Witham and Jennifer Meintel ED 417 Lesson Plan Project

2 American Revolution This unit on the American Revolutionary War is designed for middle school students, grades 6-8. It will last approximately 8-10 days. The students will be exposed to many aspects of the war including, events leading up to the conflict, key figures from both sides, major battles, and the resolution.

3 American Revolution: Objectives Given proper instruction, the students will be able to analyze and synthesize the main events leading up to the American Revolution.

4 American Revolution: Objectives Given proper instruction, the students will be able to identify and explain the role of key figures in the conflict from both sides.

5 American Revolution: Objectives Given proper instruction, the students will be able to identify, locate, and describe major battles during the war.

6 American Revolution: Objectives Given proper instruction, the students will be able to analyze and synthesize the events that led to a resolution between Britain and the American Colonies. The students will also have to analyze and explain the consequences of the war from both sides.

11 American Revolution: Web Sites http://www.multied.com/revolt This site contains a wealth of information about the causes and events before the war, battles fought and military campaigns, key figures of the war, and the aftermath of the war.

15 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 1) The teacher will begin by introducing the upcoming unit on the American Revolution by asking open-ended questions about what students are already familiar with or what they are interested in. The first assignment is to begin reading, My Brother Sam is Dead

16 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 2) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will begin to introduce some of the events that led up to the Declaration of Independence and the start of the war.

17 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 3) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will continue with the events that led to the war and begin to introduce key figures from both sides of the conflict. The students will also begin to research a key figure or event from the war for their final project

18 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 4) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will continue with key figures and events before the war The students will have lab time to research the five web sites listed previously

19 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 5) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will begin to introduce the main events during the Revolution The students will have lab time to continue their online research The students will also have time to begin to watch segments of the videocassettes that are available

20 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 6) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will continue with the discussion of events and battles during the war The students will have time to work on their research project

21 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 7) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will continue with the discussion of the war The students will randomly select which day they present their project for next week Class discussion on the reading

22 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 8) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead The teacher will continue with the discussion of the war The students will wrap up work on their projects

23 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 9) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead Project Presentations will begin today Students will receive handouts and information on the Revolution Simulation to be played at the end of the week

24 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 10) The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead Project Presentations will continue today The British and American sides will be chosen for the simulation

25 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 11) The students will finish reading My Brother Sam is Dead Final project presentations will conclude today Review for the final unit test

26 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 12) Students will have class discussion on their readings (25% of final unit exam grade) Students will be given time to meet with their respective sides to plan strategy for the war simulation

27 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 13) Students will take the final unit exam on the American Revolution

28 American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 14-18) Students will participate in American Revolution Simulation and watch the movie, The Crossing
