Fluency Oral reading fluency is the ability to read with accuracy, and with appropriate rate, expression, and phrasing.

Fluency Provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Strengthened by repeated and monitored oral reading. Is often neglected.

Why Fluency is Important Allows readers to focus attention on making connections between ideas in a text and between these ideas and their background knowledge. Less fluent readers must focus their attention primarily on decoding and accessing the meaning of individual words. Therefore, they have little attention left for comprehending the text.
