10 Participatory Evaluation Formal, reflective processes targeted at empowerment and development Formal, reflective processes targeted at empowerment and development Involvement of a broad pool of stakeholders in a collective process of knowledge production Involvement of a broad pool of stakeholders in a collective process of knowledge production An environment of collective learning and evolution through self-assessment An environment of collective learning and evolution through self-assessment Just, equitable, and sustainable outcomes Just, equitable, and sustainable outcomes

11  Look to Pasteur for Inspiration Replace the basic and applied model of science with the idea that every field has many facets and that groups can contribute through their individual strengths and research visions. Our scientists and technology experts should be encouraged to think beyond the bounds of their disciplines and look for opportunities for collaboration and ways to extend their work.

12 Reflect on the Outcomes We Want Reflect on the Outcomes We Want Make science and technology a collaborator and a partner in driving outcomes as well as in creating them.

13 Broaden Society’s View and Knowledge of Science and Technology I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with some discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion. Thomas Jefferson
