The space race started in 1957 when the United States and the Soviet Union were in a heated competition over who would conquer space first..The competition got started when the Soviet Union launched Spudnik 1. The presidents at the time were Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon. They all agreed that conquering outer space was very important.

3. The competition was on The space race became an important part of the culture, technological, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the cold war. President Kennedy wanted to beat the Soviets the Moon.
