2 The Rest of the Semester Welcome back from break

3 The Rest of the Semester Each team should plan to refine their plane and take it back to the DCRC airfield. I would like each team to refine the design and construction The most important thing to me is for you to redo anything that was done in hast or “because we didn’t have time” All temporary work must me removed. Your plane should match your drawings. Mass and Mass center predicted in SolidWorks should match the predictions

4 Purchases I need to see the Excel budgets today and everyday I want to be sure we are keeping careful track of all expenses.

11 First Presentations The first set of Individuals presentations starting next week. Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

12 First Presentations We will have the first set of Individuals presentations starting next week. Aim for 7 minutes of presentation and focus on design and how the design was translated into a prototype You should have no less that 14 PowerPoint slides There should be figures and all slides Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

13 What to Include We will have the first set of presentations the second week of class. Talk about: How you made design decisions and show the fabricated result List of design goals for the full plane and each subsystem SAE wants you to should a design evolution Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

14 What to Include We will have the first set of presentations the second week of class. Talk about: How you made design decisions and show the fabricated result List of design goals for the full plane and each subsystem SAE wants you to should a design evolution Lots of SolidWorks drawings of your plane or subsystem Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

15 What Not to Include No need to discuss safety issues How you used your time Where you found or purchased items “because Don thought it would work” “because Don had one ” Common knowledge General theory Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html

16 Writing & Presentation Issues I have posted my document on writing “Writing issues for engineers”. I consider this a work in progress. There is a “First Draft Check List” in the “Writing issues for engineers” document. Please use after you finish your first draft is assembled for all documents to be turned in for this class. There is a separate section of this documents for presentations

Writing & Presentation Issues Will the reader or recipient know what it is? Identify your document with a descriptive title and an introductory sentence. Your document must have your name, the date, the assignment, and a title. Get in the habit of using a premade title pages for MS Word and PowerPoint Use mine as a template if you like 17 Issue 1: Information Rich Title Pages

Writing & Presentation Issues Make sure that your reader can quickly find the section he or she is looking for. If you are covering more then one topic, each topic needs to have a titled section. 18 Issue 2: Separate Different Topics

Writing & Presentation Issues Use logical sections and subsections Title each so that so that the content is obvious 19 Issues 1&2 Corollary: Sections Titles

20 Writing & Presentation Issues Issue 2: Will the reader or recipient know what it is? Identify your document with a descriptive title and an introductory sentence.

21 Color and other embellishments Color, you can use color but your document but figures should work in B&W if possible. Hyperlinks, you should use them but the web address must appear in a footnote or the reference section. Animations, movies and sound files can be helpful but can also be trouble. Be aware that some of your readers will not be able to access them.

34 Design Support Documents Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html 1)Gantt chart A timeline with milestones, component delivery dates, estimated dates of the completions of sub-tasks. This can be a separate Excel document. 2) Weight and drag budget A document that lists target, design and as-build weight and location for all components on the plane. Specifically state what are estimates and what was calculated in SolidWorks and what was measured as-built. Include the coordinates of the CGs for all subsystem. The coordinates must be in a defined, single coordinate system and include a figure that shows the plane, coordinate system and centers. This should be in the main MS Word document.

35 Design Support Documents Taken from http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com/faybuffington.html 3) Cost budget & parts inventory A list of all component parts you will include in your plane. You should have links to data sheets. The budget should include all planed expenditures and all money spent by your group related to the project. This is can be a summary of a separate Excel spread sheet. You must save all receipts. 4) Toolbox inventory A specific list of all tools, bolts and any other hardware with sized. Do not include this in the Excel document. This should be in the main MS Word document. 5) Safety protocols Read the new School of Engineering Safety document and write a statement that indicates that you have read and will comply with all points of the School of Engineering Safety. This document must be signed by all team members.
