Why regional perspectives? mHealth may have direct impact on the medical and care services provided by regions responsible for planning, financing and delivery of healthcare Having, in accordance, direct impact on the quality of and the way of organizing, staffing, financing, developing and delivering health- and medical care to regional citizens and visitors

Possibilities Support the six characteristics of care Raise efficiency (better healthcare per krona) Support three major trends in healthcare –Integrated care –Clinical guidelines –Patient centeredness Support exchange of healthcare experiences

Obstacles Practical difficulties –Reimbursement for mhealth services –Legal and responsibility issues –Develop solid business models involving mhealth

mHealth Helpline (in Sweden: phone 112, 1177 and web www.1177.se) Education and awareness Diagnostic and treatment support at points of care Remote monitoring Remote data collection Communication and training for healthcare workers Disease and epidemic outbreak tracking

Ways forward Emergency response systems (e.g., road traffic accidents, emergency obstetric care) Human resources coordination, management, and supervision Diagnostic support and clinician-focused, evidence-based database and decision support information and documentation possibilities available at the point-of-care Remote patient monitoring Training and continuous professional development for health care workers Health-related information/learning for the general public Health promotion and community mobilization Support of long-term conditions
