Getting Ready for Post Secondary Options What are the options for you after the successful completion of high school? What tests and credits must I have?

After High School Trade School Career/ Work Military Community College 4 year college or university Must pass all sections of the exit TAKS to receive a high school diploma

Where do I start? Talk to your parents, teachers, counselors and other informed individuals Get their ideas but begin to make decisions that will work for you. Take responsibility for securing information. Visit college campuses and websites to get information

A Word About College Visits Many colleges have set visit days where they have everything open and available to see. Check their websites Set an appointment with an admissions counselor and get their name and business card. Let them know who you are and why you want to attend their college. Meet with a financial aid counselor

A Word About College Visits Visit the dorms and see college life. Visit a classroom and a professor in your chosen field of study. Make sure you also see the town where the college is. Remember, you may be there for 4 years or more. Get proof of attendance of your visit to turn in to CHHS attendance.

Get Organized Get a file folder or binder for each school Organize: test scores, transcripts, college information… Do your research: – CHHS Counseling Center Career Center – Internet- Individual school websites Make sure your course selections match what the college requires.

Scholarships Web search for scholarships- Many sites are listed on the Scholarship newsletters published every six weeks. Takes time so start early! Listen to the announcements and review our monthly Scholarship newsletter. Check your and parent’s work place

PSAT National Merit Scholarship qualifying exam Good predictor test for the SAT. May assist in helping determine whether to take the SAT or ACT Provides an access code to set up “My College Quickstart”

SAT/ ACT Fee Waivers If you qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, you may be eligible for fee waivers to take the SAT and/ or ACT. See your counselor for more information

SAT/ ACT Tests Remember to have your SAT and ACT scores sent directly to the colleges or universities that you are considering. It costs an additional ($15) to send later Also, some colleges allow “Super-scoring” of test scores, but most do not. Check with the college.

Summer 2013 Visit college, trade schools or community colleges (You have 2 college visit days this year to use) – Make an appointment Admissions, financial aid and academic departments – Be prepared and bring questions, a transcript with test scores and financial aid information – See a dorm room and cafeteria – Begin college applications

A Few Last Minute Things… Community Scholar Ambassador – Scholarships may be available for those who earn extra hours- turn in the hours! 100 hours required – Make sure to turn in all hours early so they can be verified and counted. – Must have three years of foreign language – May not have failed any courses
