5
What is a Metasearch engine? A meta-search engine is a search tool that sends user requests to several other search engines and/or databases and then gathers together the results into a single list or displays them according to their source.
6
What are some good metasearch engines? Dogpile http://www.dogpile.com. Nice because it points to the search engines and also gives tabs for video and images http://www.dogpile.com Excite http://www.excite.com Only looks at google, yahoo and bing but also gives tabs like dogpile. http://www.excite.com MetaCrawler http://www.metacrawler.com Seems to favor Yahoo has tabs like dogpile http://www.metacrawler.com Search.com http://www.search.com Seems to favor bing http://www.search.com iBoogie http://www.iboogie.tv/ Not Commercial relies on Blekko, seems pretty academic http://www.iboogie.tv/ IxQuick http://www.ixquick.com/ No tabs, doesn’t list the search engines. http://www.ixquick.com/

Be careful! We are not here to buy things from the web so steer clear of websites of a commercial nature. Some good bets for valid websites depend on sponsors and include those ending in: –.org –.gov –.edu Who owns the site? Is it a reputable group or organization? Is the information current? Does the source tell readers where its facts are from?
9
The McGraw Search Protocol Step 1 Metasearch Engine (good place to start since it gives a bird’s eye perspective using a number of search engines)
10
The McGraw Search Protocol Step 2 Search Engine (I always pick the search engine that gives the most relevant results from the Metasearch, for scholarly information)
11
The McGraw Search Protocol Step 3 (Optional) Directory EngineSearch (Once I get a better idea of what I am specifically looking for, I can do a directory search on a specific topic, usually I use Yahoo!, by the way, Yahoo! is especially great for business. Yahoo! finance—is an excellent source of company profiles and financial information)
12
The McGraw Search Protocol Step 4 (INCREASES DEPTH) School Library Databases (Such as access to EBSCO Host)
13
The McGraw Search Protocol Step 5 (SOMETIMES PRINT IS REQUIRED FOR SOME ASSIGNMENTS) School Library Catalogue (reveals books on the subject area)
14
Do a websearch, using the methods we talked about on this interesting topic: Quinceañera As you search keep in mind these questions: Who? When? Why? What ? Where? How?
15
Complete the Quinceañera quiz on Quia http://www.quia.com/quiz/3846832.html
16
Critical Thinking Skills 1.Students locate and evaluate a specific information source. 2.Students organize the sources. 3.Students eliminate irrelevant materials. 4.Students assess the quality of the sources.
