2.1 Elements
3
Chemical symbol– international symbol for each element consisting of one or two letters Physical properties– characteristics like state and colour Chemical properties– a substance’s ability to react chemically with other substances to form new products (reactivity) Metals – usually hard, shiny, malleable, ductile and good conductors of heat and electricity Non-metals – usually gasses or brittle solids at room temperature
4
Colourless, odourless, tasteless and highly flammable gas Highly reactive and lighter than air
5
- Very strong metal and ductile but can rust when exposed to water and oxygen
6
Non-metal gas that reacts with most other elements
7
Shiny soft metal that is highly reactive in water and air
8
Pale, yellow-green gas that is deadly and highly reactive
9
A liquid metal that is poisonous and carcinogenic
10
White metallic element that can be polished, moulded, stretched, and is malleable and ductile Also reflective and has great thermal conductivity
11
Brittle, grey and has a metallic lustre although it is not a metal Used as a semi-conductor
