2 Background Reducing emissions from diesel engines is one of the most important air quality challenges facing the country. More stringent heavy-duty highway and nonroad engine standards are set to take effect over the next decade, but millions of diesel engines already in use will emit large amounts of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and air toxics. These emissions are linked to asthma attacks, lost work and school days, and numerous other health impacts every year. Source EPA 2008 2

3 Background, continued The National Clean Diesel Campaign formed - designed to reduce emissions from diesel engines. In 2008 states received funding for the first time. With the EPA funding and state match, ODEQ has approximately $400,000 available in grant funds. 3
