Protecting the environment Too much land cleared for grazing Rainforests destroyed 3. Introduction of exotic species British introduced plants/animals that were not native to the country EX: British introduced rabbits/caused damaged to grazing lands/erosion

Developing diversity in the economy New Zealand depends heavily on exports Had to bring in new trading partners due to rise of tariffs in G. Britain When G. Britain joined the EU, it had to raise taxes on imports so many goods from New Zealand did not sell in G. Britain New Zealand began to trade more w/ U.S. & Japan

Pacific Islands/Economy Each country of the Pacific controls an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) These zones stretch 200 nautical miles from each country’s shores Countries can charge fees for economic activities w/in their EEZ EX: Tuna companies pay high prices to fish w/in a country’s EEZ

Pacific Islands/Problems Environmental (1) Cutting of rainforests/soil erosion Nuclear weapons testing(2) U.S./British use their territories as nuclear testing grounds People fear radiation from tests could cause health problems Global Warming (3) Rising temperatures can cause low-lying islands to sink
