What is a triad? A Triad is made up of three notes. It is built from the lowest note up, using intervals of a third.

The tonic major triad is made up of the first, third, and fifth notes of the major scale.

A major triad built on the tonic is labelled with the uppercase Roman Numeral “I” Each major triad contains intervals of a major 3 rd and perfect 5 th.

Solid triad- notes are stacked and played together as a chord. Broken triad, the notes are written melodically and played one after the other as an arpeggio.

The tonic minor triad is made up of the 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th notes of the MINOR SCALE. A minor triad built on the tonic is labelled with the lower case “i”. Lower case shows it is a minor triad. Each triad has intervals of a minor 3 rd and a perfect 5 th.

If tonic triads are built on the first note of a scale….what note do you think dominant triads are built on? The dominant triad consists of the dominant, leading note, and super tonic notes of the scale. (Or! 5 th, 7 th, and 2 nd notes of the scale)

In major scales: Use the fifth, seventh, and second notes of the scale. In minor scales: use the fifth, RAISED seventh (as in a harmonic minor scale) and the seventh note. The dominant triad should be the same in the major and minor scales.

The subdominant triad is built on the Fouth (IV) note of the scale. It consists of the subdominant, submediant, and tonic (4,6,1 degrees of the scale)

The harmonic minor scale is used when building the subdominant triad. It is made up of the 4,6,1 scale degrees of the minor scale. Write out the iv chord of B minor Remember, the subdominant chord in a minor scale has intervals of a minor 3 rd and perfect 5 th.
