1
The Sun The center of our solar system A main sequence yellow star Is powered through Nuclear fusion. A reaction where 2 atoms of Hydrogen are forced together releasing energy and creating a new atom of Helium The sun is primarily made up of Hydrogen, and Helium and traces of other elements
2
The inner planets The 4 inner planets are rocky and revolve around the sun The 4 inner planets in order of their orbits are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars The largest of the inner planets is Earth, followed by Venus, Mars and Mercury
3
The outer planets Large gas planets with small rocky cores Orbit the sun in this order Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune Jupiter is the largest of the gas planets. Saturn’s density is less then the density of water.
4
Asteroids Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt. This is thought to be the remains of a failed planet. Asteroids are either rocky or metallic or a combination of both They sometimes travel in highly irregular orbits and can strike the planets, moons and other bodies in the solar system
5
Comets Comets are bodies that have a highly elliptical orbit. They travel from the far reaches of the solar system to the inner solar system They are made up primarily of Ice, rock and dust. Their tails are created when they heat up and the ice and dust create the tails that we see.
6
Moons These are small rocky and ice bodies that orbit planets They are considered natural satellites Earth has 1 moon Mars 2 Jupiter and Saturn each have 50+ moons Uranus and Neptune 20+ Our moon helps keep our tilt stable and effects our tides
