What will the Future Bring? By: Erin Merkel

Cell Phones are a major advantage in today’s society. Without the invention of this technology there would be a lack of communication between people around the world. Cell phones make life a lot easier than it was back in the 1800’s.

Description In 1947, the introduction of hexagonal cells for mobile base stations was invented by Bell Labs at AT&T. Cellular devices are popular devices in our society. There are many pros and cons associated with them. Most of the first cell phones created were much larger than the modern cell phones today. With the cell phones being so large they were not able to be carried in jacket pockets so they were first installed as car telephones.

Miniaturization Trend in technology toward smaller scales for first mechanical, then optical and most recently electronic devices. This process allowed phone companies to produce smaller, hand-held mobile phones.

How Cell Phones Work Cell phone usage differs from provider to provider and nation to nation. All communicate through radio waves with a cell site base station. Phones have a transreceiver that transmits voice and data to the nearest site. This is usually 5 to 8 miles away. If the phone is not close to its specific cell site, it will adjust to the cell site most near the area. Cell sites have relatively low-power radio transmitters which broadcast their presence and relay communications between the mobile handsets and the switch.

How Cell Phones Work Cont. The dialogue between the handset and the cell site is a stream of digital data. The technology that achieves this depends on the system which the mobile phone operator has adopted. A few examples of this include AMPS, GSM, and UMTS. These are very important in the cellular technology world.

Cell phones have come a long way with all the new technology approaching our society. Some of the many features that cell phones have are text messaging, downloading ring tones, and games. In the near future, studies have shown that cell phones are going to be able to do this and so much more! According to some researchers, the United States has been behind other countries with creating new technology. Only in the past few years has the United States made an effort to invent new technology that will be useful in the future.

3G is third generation technology in the context of mobile phone standards. Allows data to be transferred at speeds that never were available before. This technology includes: email, instant messaging, and downloading information. Global roaming will be available with 3G. It will be much more convenient for all mobile phone users.

2001 –NTT DoCoMO, one of the largest telecommunication companies located in Japan was the first to come up with the technology known as 3G. 2003- 3G services began in Europe Available in many other countries and is continuing to become popular all around the world. 2007- Nigeria awarded 3G licenses to GSM companies. In the near future, more and more phone companies will be adopting this new technology.

NETWORKS: –In the future cell phones will be able to transfer data at several megabits per second. HANDSETS: –There will be new styles for handsets that include graphic designs. CAMERAS: –There will not only be high and clear resolutions, but most will have the same features as digital cameras.

Bluetooth allows the cell phone to communicate with other Bluetooth users. It is a hands-free headset that does not require any wires. Data can travel faster with the use of Bluetooth. It is also much more convenient than cell phones today. Bluetooth has a limited range, which can prevent any type of hacker trying to disrupt phone conversations. Although this does not happen often, people should still be aware.

We can communicate with whoever we need to whenever it is necessary. Cell Phones can be information sources with all the features they have now. ( ex: internet, weather report etc.) They are a great source of entertainment. They can also help people with organization. Cell Phones may cost a lot of money. They can be harmful to human health because of the radiation they give off They can also be a distraction while driving. This may cause accidents. Cell Phones may be disruptive in the classroom during the school day.

The introduction of cell phones made more people aware of health hazards. There have been cases of study that show the link between cell phone use and certain types of cancer-related illnesses. This has been a big problem in our society that needs to be addressed.

There was a scientific study that was a source of evidence for the theory that stated that mobile phones were a cause in the collapse of bee hives.
