What Does it Mean to “Be in the Limelight?” What does it mean to be in the ‘limelight’?

Uses of limestone L.O: To understand some of the uses of limestone 10/10/2015 Starter, true or false 1.Limestone is an igneous rock 2.Limestone’s chemical formula is CaCo 3 3.Phytomining is where bacteria break apart minerals by leaching 4.An alloy is a mixture of a metal and something else to make it stronger 5.Covalent bonding is where two non metals share electrons 6.Ionic bonding is where a metal and a non metal use iron to bond.

Manufacture of cement The main raw materials for cement are limestone and clay. A small amount of gypsum is also added to help the cement set at the right speed. Clay or shale Limestone or chalk Gypsum (calcium sulphate) heat Cement

Cement, concrete and mortar To make concrete cement is mixed with small stones or gravel. Mortar consists of cement mixed with calcium hydroxide. This makes a smooth slow setting mixture suitable for bricklaying Cement, concrete and mortar all set when interlocking crystals grow between cement particles joining them together.

Limestone, sand and sodium carbonate are the raw materials used to make most glass. Limestone Lime (calcium hydroxide) Sand (silicon dioxide) Sodium carbonate heat water Glass heat

3 x worksheets. The first 2 people to complete the ‘concrete and cement’ worksheet become markers. The first 2 pupils to complete the ‘ores’ worksheet become the markers for that one. Then complete the word search and stick it in. Then in pairs find a laptop, go to your class folder and complete the ‘resources’ worksheet.

10/10/2015Limestone Limestone is a __________ rock made up of mainly calcium carbonate. It’s cheap and easy to obtain. Some uses: 1) Building materials – limestone can be quarried and cut into blocks to be used in _______. However, it is badly affected by ____ ____. 2) Glass making – glass is made by mixing limestone with _____ and soda: 3) Cement making – limestone can be “roasted” in a rotary kiln to produce dry cement. It’s then mixed with sand and gravel to make _______. Limestone + sand + soda glass Words – sand, building, sedimentary, concrete, acid rain

Making Glass 1.Weigh 3.5g boric acid, 0.5g zinc oxide and 6.5g lead oxide. (these three ingredients work in the same way as limestone, sand and soda but melt at a lower temperature). 2. Mix the chemicals together in a crucible and add a VERY small amount of a transitional metal (this will colour the glass). 3.Heat the mixture on a roaring flame for about 5 minutes 4.Pour the contents quickly onto a heatproof mat. 10/10/2015 Limestone + sand + soda glass
