Help me smile (Put each scenario into an envelope for each group at the start of the lesson and then delete this slide) My name is William. When I was growing inside my mum’s tummy, I developed differently. It meant that I found it more difficult to learn to walk and talk. I couldn’t go to the nursery that my sister went to, so I went to a special one. My name is Todd. The worst things about having a brain tumour are the medicine and not being able to play with my friends. The chemotherapy made me sick and grumpy and then it made my hair fall out. I didn’t look like Todd anymore and I didn’t understand why medicine would make me look and feel worse. I’m called Summer. Where I live it’s really busy. There aren’t many places I can go to play. I also have Down Syndrome which makes it difficult for me to understand things and to be understood as quickly as some people. I like the trampoline and wish I had a scooter but I need help to do some things safely. My name is Shay. I used to love playing football, but after every game I would get bad pains in my legs that took days to get over. I just got on with it. Then one day I got a rash and went to the doctor loads of times to find out what was causing it. I missed six months of school and my friends stopped calling round. I wish I could be out playing football with them. My name is Joe and when my heart wasn’t working properly, I needed an operation to have a new one. I stayed in hospital for ages waiting for the right donor. Something called a Berlin worked a bit like a beating heart for me. I was really glad when I got a new heart and went home from hospital. I’m still poorly sometimes and mum teaches me and my sister at home. I have to take lots of medicine

Help me smile! BBC Children in Need wants to see that every child in the UK has a childhood which is safe, happy and secure, and allows them the chance to reach their potential. Doing this could put smiles on the faces of children all around the UK Can you think of ways to be a Champion and help these children smile?

Well done for today… Remember that it doesn’t always take a big thing to make a difference, sometimes even a little help makes a lot of difference. When we fundraise for BBC Children in Need, even the smallest donation could make a big difference to a child just like you. Why not discuss your ideas with learners from other classes at break or lunchtime? So, be champions and let’s get fundraising, so that we have something to celebrate in the… Celebration of Champions
20
In this lesson, did you… Learn how to facilitate and report on a group discussion? Think about what charities are, and who they help?
