2 We Are Learning To:- Understand that breakfast is an important meal. Identify the different food groups and what products belong to those groups. Recognise how food groups make up a balanced diet. Identify that breakfast foods should be from a variety of food groups to make it balanced. Understand safety and hygiene rules when working with food. Design and make a balanced breakfast. End

4 End What is breakfast and why do we need it? Use a whiteboard pen to mind map what you think breakfast is and why it is an important meal.

5 Pupils to mind map what they think the word breakfast means and why breakfast is an important meal. Discuss that some schools have a breakfast club. pupils to discuss whether they think it is a good idea or not giving reasons. End

6 Breakfast is the first meal of the day, which is usually eaten in the morning. The name comes from the concept that you have not eaten while sleeping, so you are fasting during that time, and break the fast with the meal. End

7 Breakfast does magic for our bodies, it gives our bodies fuel and energy to start the day. End

9 Pupils to record what they have had for breakfast and research which food groups they belong to and whether it is balanced. Discuss whether the pupils think the breakfast products are healthy or not. End

10 Carbohydrates Which foods are carbohydrates? Click on them to find out.

11 End Carbohydrates give you energy. You find them in sugary and starchy foods like potatoes, rice, cereals, pasta, bread and some fruit and vegetables.

17 End Proteins help your body grow and repair itself. You find them in meats, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs and beans.

19 End Fats provide energy and help in building up your body. You find them in dairy products, red meats, some poultry and fish.

22 End It helps you digest your food. You find fibre in lots of food like cereals, fruit, bread and vegetables. Iron is good for the blood. Calcium is good for your bones. Minerals are in lots of foods, but are especially in fresh fruit and vegetables. Vitamins are good for keeping your body healthy. They are good for your skin, bones and teeth. They are mostly found in dairy products (milk, eggs and butter), fresh fruit and vegetables.

23 End What is a balanced diet?

24 A Balanced Diet You must have carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and fibre in the correct proportions. If there is not enough protein, you will not be able to grow properly and you will not be able to repair yourself i.e. wounds will not heal properly. If you do not have enough energy containing foods you will feel very tired because you will not have enough energy. If you have too much energy containing foods you will become overweight. End

26 Drag items from the breakfast products onto the plate to show your chosen breakfast design.

27 End REMEMBER!! Always wash you hands before working with food. Always wipe surfaces clean before preparing food. Keep raw and cooked meats separate. Can you think of any more?

30 Write a formal letter to local supermarkets asking to visit to look at a range of breakfast products and sample some products. Pupils to sample a range of breakfast products and comment on their taste and record which food groups they belong to. Record nutritional information for a variety of breakfast products. Carry out a school survey to find out which are the most popular breakfast products in the school. Analyse results and display as graphs. End

31 Activities continued. Practise using tools and equipment safely and hygienically. Practise chopping, cutting and measuring using suitable equipment. Breakfast club mini enterprise – costing breakfast products and selling to make a profit. Create menus for breakfasts. Write a set of instructions for making the breakfasts. Design posters to advertise a breakfast club in the school. End
