China’s Flag China’s national flag was adopted on September 27, 1949. This flag was first raised by President Mao Zedong in Tiananmen Square on October 1, 1949- the day of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The People’s Republic of China is the official name. People’s Republic of China in Chinese is Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo.

China’s Flag The rectangular flag has a red field with five golden-yellow stars (each with five points). In the upper left corner the star on the left is larger than the other four.

Symbolism The red color of the flag symbolizes revolution. The large star symbolizes the Communist Party (which rules China). Finally, the smaller stars represent the people of China.

Raising and Lowering The Chinese flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset in a simple ceremony everyday. The daily ceremonies take place in Beijing at Tiananmen Square.

Facts The flag means Chinese people can overcome all difficulties and defeat all the enemies. Zeng Liansong is the designer of the Chinese National Flag.

Zeng Liansong Zeng Liansong, the designer of the Chinese National Flag, lived in Shanghai. He created the flag in 1949. Zeng lived to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the declaration of the People’s Republic of China on October 1 st, 1999.

Zeng Liansong Continued In July 1949, he read in the newspaper Jiefang Ribao (Liberation Daily), that designs for the flag were wanted. He liked painting therefore, he considered himself qualified for the job. For the design he took into consideration well- known symbols of communism: red color, stars, and a hammer and sickle.

Zeng Liansong Continued Zeng first made the stars in a line, but he asked his friend’s opinion and he did not like it. He made it like we have it today, but with a hammer and sickle and his friend liked that.

Zeng Liansong Continued Mao Zedong, the president, voted for his flag but didn’t like the hammer and sickle. They kept his design but removed the hammer and sickle to become the chinese flag we have today.
