Read the poem on the handout and answer questions 1-3 on your warm up sheet (please do NOT write on the handout). Discuss its thematic connection to the novella.

Read the opening of chapter 1- just the first two paragraphs where the setting is described. Then, read the first six paragraphs of chapter 6, where the river is once again described. Make a T-chart with your group in which you compare the diction used in each description. How do certain words change the mood?

Steinbeck was known for his simple yet powerful imagery. There are several types of imagery used repeatedly in the text: trees/leaves, animal, sunlight/darkness, etc. We will track the use of sunlight imagery through the text.
