1
Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
2
What is photosynthesis? It is the most important chemical reaction on our planet.
3
What is the equation for the chemical reaction of photosynthesis? Six molecules of carbon dioxide react with six molecules of water to form 1 molecule of glucose and six molecules of oxygen.
4
What is photosynthesis like? The process of changing light energy to chemical energy Means “putting together with light” Energy stored as sugar Occurs in plants, algae, bacteria Takes place in the chloroplasts, using chlorophyll, the green pigment in plantschloroplasts chlorophyll
5
What happens during photosynthesis? Plants capture light energy and use that energy to make glucose or sugar Sunlight provides the energy needed by chlorophyll to change molecules of carbon dioxide and water into glucose Oxygen is also released in this reaction
6
Where does photosynthesis take place?
7
What happens in the chloroplasts?
8
Why is photosynthesis important? We cannot make our own food. We must get our food from plants. Plants are the first step in the food chain. The oxygen released during photosynthesis is necessary for all living things.
9
What is cellular respiration? The release of chemical energy for use by cells.
10
What is the difference between respiration and breathing? Breathing is the physical process of taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide First step in the process Cellular respiration is using the oxygen to release energy from sugar
12
What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration?
13
What is respiration like? The breakdown of glucose molecules to release energy that requires oxygen Takes place in all living things EVEN producers Takes place in mitochondria – the organelle responsible for getting energy to the cell
14
What happens during respiration?
15
Where does cellular respiration take place?
16
How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration are related?
17
What is fermentation? Process by which energy is released without oxygen Body’s back up plan for respiration Produces lactic acid that produces muscle cramps
18
Why is fermentation important? Used to create many products including baked goods and alcohol
