Nuts and Bolts Opening Week Activities
2
Monday, August 31, 2015 Sit according to the seating chart
3
Science Investigations What do you remember about the process of investigating a question in science? Where is that process done in the real world?
4
Integrity of Toilet Paper Why are there so many different brands? Are some better then others? Does cost make a difference? How about construction?
5
Integrity of Toilet Paper Write up an investigation for determining the integrity, strength of different brands of toilet paper. Compare the brands to the School Toilet Paper. Charmin” Angel Soft7 th Generation (Recycled) ($.02/sq ft)($.01/sq ft)($.o15/sq ft) Write, beginning with the Background, through and including the Procedure This is due tomorrow, September 1, as we will be performing the investigation and collecting data and completing the report.
6
Integrated Science 3-4 September 1 Learning Target: Review and repeat the steps of designing and and performing and completing the write up of a lab investigation Success Criteria: Demonstrate physical skill of carefully conducting a lab. Complete the lab write up to the best of your recollection and submit
7
Perform Integrity of TP Experiment Review your procedure and modify with partner Gather materials for work in partners. Decide how to collect the data and everyone record Test and check your procedure with one trial and modify as necessary. Create an appropriate graph to illustrate the data Write up the rest of the lab through the Conclusion Finished? Read Science World Be prepared to check on Wednesday!
8
Objectives for September 2 Describe Mr. Nash Determine the expectations for this science class Evaluate your lab write up by comparing to the model Determine the expectations for you related to this class, i.e. the system and the rules
9
Who is Mr. Nash Find out a little about the teacher who is delivering the science curriculum to you and from whom you may learn more than science.
10
Pretest Take a pretest of the course Use a pencil on a scantron
11
Integrity of Toilet Paper Lab Check your write up for this investigation: 1. Take out your write up 2. Obtain the model/sample write up 3. Compare yours to the model 4. Obtain “Lab Write Up Score Sheet” 5. Rate/score your lab write up 6. Return the Model/Sample 7. Staple your Score Sheet to your Write Up and submit it for formative grade
12
Syllabus Obtain the syllabus for this class Read it carefully Show to parent and sign and detach the signature form Submit just the signature form tomorrow, Wednesday, September 3 Review the syllabus again Be ready for a Syllabus Quiz Keep the syllabus (it is also on my Swift Website)
13
Nuts & Bolts for Level II (3-4) Science September 3, 2015 Objectives: Demonstrate your knowledge of the syllabus Know Lab Safety Describe the textbook Tomorrow late to class, without a note, will be recorded as tardy
14
Grades CategoryPercent Formative20 % Summative80 % Employability Comes from Formative and Class Engagement (does not directly effect Academic – will show as “no count” in Skyward as 100 points for the quarter). Work not submitted on time, any off task behavior effects these points) Academic
15
Employability Grade Class Time Work Form Please read the rules Realize they apply to your Employability Grade Print and sign your name to indicate your understanding and intention to follow the rules See your 100 points in Skyward - Keep them!
16
Syllabus Signed form submitted Take syllabus quiz (formative grade)
17
Lab Safety Watch: Lab Safety Video on You TubeLab Safety Video the link is in the S-Drive Nash Outbox and Bad Lab SafetyBad Lab Safety Read: Lab Safety Contract Tour: Lab Safety in the Room (equipment & response) Done! - Know for the Quiz Sign: You and your parent(s) and return tomorrow Tomorrow: Lab Safety Quiz
18
Who Are You??? Fill in the Who Am I….. design document Tell me, your teacher, about yourself, as we will be together for the next 175 days Submit it by Tuesday, September 8 We will use it for a get acquainted activity in the near future
19
Nuts & Bolts9/4/2015 Objectives: Test your knowledge of lab safety & experimental design Survey the text Organize teams and individual roles (jobs) Submit: Who Am I Keep your laptops closed until told to open them!!
20
Textbook Survey & Lab Safety Signed contract due today Take the Lab Safety Quiz (90% required) Look over the text as you complete the survey This survey is due Tuesday, September 8 Complete it using the text on line ***Remember homework counts toward Employability
21
Experimental Design Take the pretest regarding the study of Giardia cysts Demonstrate your knowledge of the process and the steps and the format You will learn about the design that you will need to use during the year and be prepared to use and evaluate on the End of Course Assessment in June
22
Textbook Survey Look over the text as you complete the survey This survey is due Wednesday, September 9 Complete it using the text on line
23
Nuts & Bolts9/8/2015 Do we have it all screwed together now? 1. Take a look at Skyward now to see your progress so far 2. Any last questions before we start into our first unit? 3. Finish your Textbook Survey (it will be checked for completion and accuracy)
24
Text On Line Go to S-Drive Nash Outbox for BSCS Text shortcut Save it as an icon for easy access or Kentridge Website, Staff, Nash and click on Web Page Usernames and Passwords are the same for each period: Period 3 isdnash3 Period 4 isdnash1 **Click on Level 2 for Student Edition
25
Employability Look at your employability grades Notice the Class Time Use of 100 points The Comments are in code: OT = Off Task TK = Talking during instruction or silent work D = Disruptive (distracting others) AB = Absent (-3 points, can be retrieved by submission of work, labeled “absent”) LT = Tardy (-2 points B = Behavior (general disregard of rules) UP = Unprepared (e.g. laptop not here or not charged) W = Late or missing work NFD = Not following directions Except for absence points, you may not retrieve lost points. If you argue you will simply lose more points.
26
Lab Write Ups Obtain “How to Write a Lab Report” and Integrity of Toilet Paper Sample from the S-Drive Review them – You have to know this format! Place it in your Reference Folder in your H-Drive You will be referring to this frequently
27
Teams The majority of the work is done in teams Each person in the team will have a role to play Each team member should abide by the listed and team generated norms (conducting the process of accomplishing the work) Your team is the immediate group of students around you as designated by Mr. Nash Read the Team Work guidelines and complete the form with Team # and Name (if you choose) and jobs or roles within the team and submit to Mr. Nash. Complete the form and submit it to Mr. Nash Create a Science Reference folder in your H-Drive and place this Team Work document in there.
28
The Cup Challenge 1. Take a rubber band and tie 4 strings to it 2. Use only the strings to move 10 cups into a pyramid formation. 3. Take a picture 4. In what different ways did you have to work as a team? 5. What engineering changes would make this task easier?
29
Textbook Survey Review What are the 5 E’s? Goals of the science program? On what science subject will we concentrate? What process in science will we consider in order to answer questions? What happens at the end of the year for which we will take care to prepare? Submit your Textbook Survey
30
Outcomes Biodiversity; natural selection and evolution. Cell structure and processes Energy and metabolism Inheritance DNA, proteins and mutations play fundamental roles in traits, inheritance & relative organisms.
