The Two Sides North Uniforms: Blue coats States: 23 Advantages: -Larger population -More factories/industries Disadvantages: -Soldiers not as well trained -Invasion force/fighting on unfamiliar territory South Uniforms: Grey coats State : 11 Advantages: -Better marksmen -Fighting on their own territory -Better generals (start of war) Good war strategy Disadvantages: -Smaller population -No factories -Economy reliant on North -Less centralized government

1862-1863-Southern Victories Fredericksburg Led by Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson Trench war- dug trenches and fired down the hill at Union soldiers Chancellorsville War strategy: divided his troops up Some marched around the side of Hooker’s position One side at the front One at the rear—they were sandwiched

1863-1865 The Tide Turns Gettysburg- Union win read in book Vicksburg Siege-Union control The Wilderness Campaign The six bloodiest weeks of the war began May 5, 1864 In between Washington D.C and Richmond, Va. There were woods. 1864 election- Lincoln was re-elected The Petersburg Siege- Union win Union soldiers got supplies, Confederacy didn’t

The War’s End Sherman’s March to the Sea Trail of destruction- Sherman’s troops burned cities and farmlands along the way (Georgia to Atlantic Coast) The Fall of Richmond- Richmond is the Conf capital The Union wanted to seize the capital to take the win Surrender at Appomattox- let’s read

Civil War Facts Border states Border States (Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, & Missouri) were States that had soldiers fighting for both sides! Slavery was legal there. African Americans in war 54 th regiment Were allowed to enlist in 1862

Facts….contin.. Habeas Corpus- Pg. 53—Lincoln suspended this right as a way of dealing with war opponents. Jail without trial What is it called when the government forces you to fight…..?
