25 WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM THESE ADS? Make sure that the information that you present in your Big Idea Project is persuasive while also being reasonable. Use appropriate and effective visual materials/images. Avoid logical fallacies such as: -False Authority (my baby trimester chart) -Incomplete Research (the Camel doctor ad) -Appeal to Force (the spanking coffee fiasco) -Bandwagon Appeal (the crazy cola ad) See “Fallacy Gallery” in Doc Sharing & Unit 2 Reading for more info. 25

26 RESEARCH & INTERVIEWS When conducting research, it may be necessary to go directly to the expert who can best provide information and insights on the topic; interviewing, either in person, over the telephone, or through email, allows you to ask questions that specifically relate to your topic and concerns. For the Unit 4 Project, you will plan a potential interview for your Big Idea Project. 26

40 UNIT 4 ONLINE DISCUSSION Select a credible article from either the Kaplan library or through the search engine googlescholar.com. This source should be one that you could use to help you to support the argument you are making about your “big idea” or it could be an article that challenges the argument you are making. Read this source and then select a 1-2 paragraph passage from that source that is particularly relevant to your argument. Begin this week’s invention lab by simply copying that 1-2 paragraph passage into the Invention Lab. Label this ORIGINAL SOURCE and include an APA formatted full References page citation for this source. 40

41 UNIT 4 ONLINE DISCUSSION Next, write a paragraph that you might eventually include in the draft of your persuasive paper, including paraphrased information from the 1-2 source paragraphs you have selected and included above. Since you are using ideas from that source, you will need to give credit to that source by including an APA formatted in text citation within the paragraph itself. Label this paragraph PARAPHRASE. Finally, tell your classmates what you find challenging about paraphrasing and citing and explain what you plan to do to overcome this challenge. Your post (excluding the cut and pasted original source) should be at least 200 words. 41

Is the in text citation included and it is in correct APA format? What suggestions for revising the APA citation would you recommend? If you yourself are uncertain about APA citations format requirements, try using a citation generator like Bib Me and see how the citation it creates compares to those created by your classmates. Acceptable Paraphrase: When it comes to teaching ethics in undergraduate programs, it is preferable to use faculty who have a profound interest in the subject to teach such courses (Stevenson, 2007).
