Credit Accumulation Students are assessed against standards that are assigned a credit value.

There are two types of standards: Achievement Standards - can be awarded at an Achieved, Merit or Excellence level

Unit Standards Achieved is generally the highest award The standard is broken down into elements Students need to show proficiency in each element

Level 1 NCEA requirements A total of 80 credits Including: 8 literacy credits level 1 8 numeracy credits level 1

Level 2 and 3 NCEA Level 2 80 credits – 20 of these at level 1 Level 3 80 credits – 20 of these at level 2

Endorsement certificates Excellence – 50 excellence credits Merit – 50 merit or above credits

14 credits in Mathematics at Level 1 or higher 4 credits at Level 2 or above in Reading 4 credits at Level 2 or above in Writing University Entrance from 2004 14 credits at level 3 or higher in no more than 2 domains or ‘approved subject’ area 14 credits at level 3 or higher in an ‘approved subject’ area 14 credits at level 3 or higher in an ‘approved subject’ area

New Zealand Scholarship A monetary award recognising top students Does not earn credits; is not a qualification Scholarship awards appear on Record of Learning

How do students know? Day One information: What is to be assessed including the credit value. Indication of when assessment will occur. Is the assessment internal or external?

Internal or External Assessment External assessments are run by NZQA. The school has no control over the timing or how the assessment will be conducted.

School assessment policy Each students will receive a copy in week 5 Covers procedure for absences from assessment cases of sharing of work concerns about grade awarded

Absence from an assessment Illness Student needs - to apply for an assessment opportunity - Collect form from office - Requires a written note Pre-arranged Absence Discuss with class teacher/Principal Deliberate absence results in a Not Achieved grade

Extension of time Must be pre-approved Valid reason

Sharing of work If students share work for an individual assessment both are given a Not Achieved grade

Re-submission or re-assessment Re-submission If there are slight errors or omissions students may be offered the opportunity to review their assessment and re-submit

If practical at least one re-assessment opportunity is offered. Emphasis is on “Do it once – do it right” There is no re-assessment opportunity in externals Re-assessment

Concerns about grade awarded Talk to teacher (within days) Review by HOD Review by Principal Nominee

Reporting results Assess to NZQA website to review marks that have been submitted

Use of web-site Students are encouraged to check the website on a regular basis. Tawa College submits a file every two weeks from May but it can be as frequent as twice a week later in the year. If a problem – please ask.
