Research & Knowledge Management Research Update Dr. Mohammad Koohmaraie Cow plant study –Variable pathogen prevalence on hides –Interventions are effective = 0 positives in hot box Feedlot Study –E. coli O157:H7 prevalence variable across pens –Some animals never shed the pathogen –All animals must be sampled to account for variation Transportation and Lairage –Hide prevalence higher at plant –70% of isolates of unknown origin Enumeration methodology –E. coli and Salmonella = $2 per sample E. coli survival on hides –@ 9 days
