OVERVIE W Over the last 10 years the world has seen the democratization of design and photography through the proliferation of accessible design tools and applications. Popular image based apps and design programs including: Instagram, Photo Booth, iPhoto, Camera Plus, Hipstamatic and even lesser-known apps such as KRINK and Color Schemer have all empowered aspiring photographers and designers to enhance there amateur work through the use of an apps professionally rendered filters and graphic applications. Much like the World Wide Web these applications, largely consumed through mobile devices, have made our already shrinking world that much smaller. 24 hours a day creativity is at our fingertips and at the click of a button we can share our creativity with our curated list of followers and those we follow. The social aspect of these tools is what makes them so compelling. In less than 20 minutes I can take a selfie (a mobile term for self portrait) with my iPhone, edit it in Camera Plus, tag it with digital marker in KRINK, upload it to Instagram, and add yet another Instagram provided filter to the already enhanced photo before sharing it with the world. It is native for artist, designers and photographers to share there work but in this context what exactly are they sharing? “Identity Theft” calls to question the role of identity in image based, social applications that enable the user to both distort and control how the world perceives them.
