2 Emerging Technology Overview  Emerging technologies are those which are just beginning to be adopted or are at the initial acceptance stage, and are expected to make a significant contribution to the world of IT and the businesses that implement them.

3 Voice over IP  VoIP (voice over IP - voice delivered using the Internet Protocol) is a term used in IP Telephony for a set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice information using the Internet Protocol.  This means sending voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN).  A major advantage of VoIP and Internet telephony is that it avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service.

4 Voice over IP  In addition to IP, VoIP uses the real-time protocol (RTP) to help ensure that packets get delivered in a timely way.  Using public networks, it is currently difficult to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS).  Better service is possible with private networks managed by an enterprise or by an Internet telephony service provider (ITSP).

5 How VoIP Works  Using VoIP, an enterprise positions a "VoIP device" at a gateway. The gateway receives packetized voice transmissions from users within the company and then routes them to other parts of its intranet (local area or wide area network) or, using a T-carrier system or E-carrier interface, sends them over the public switched telephone network.gatewayT-carrier system

7 VoIP – Option 1 – Computer to Computer  This is the easiest way to use VoIP.  No long distance charges.  Several companies offer free solutions  You need a microphone, sound card, speakers, and high speed Internet  NOT suitable for business!

9 VoIP – Option 2 – Computer to Telephone  This method allows you to call anyone (who has a phone) from your computer.  Requires a software client.  The software is typically free, but the calls may have a small per-minute charge.

10 VoIP – Option 3 – Telephone to Computer  A few companies are providing special numbers or calling cards that allow a standard telephone user to initiate a call to a computer user.  The caveat is that the computer user must have the vendor's software installed and running on his or her computer.  The cost of the call is normally much cheaper than a traditional long-distance call.

11 VoIP – Option 4 – Telephone to Telephone  Through the use of gateways, you can connect directly with any other standard telephone or IP telephone in the world.

12 SSL VPN  SSL VPNs will provide better connectivity for remote user VPN’s (as opposed to site-to-site IPSec VPN’s).  SSL VPNs require only one open port on the firewall.  SSL VPNs create a portal for the users to go to with their applications – based on domain policies.

13 MPLS  Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a standards-approved technology for speeding up network traffic flow and making it easier to manage.  MPLS involves setting up a specific path for a given sequence of packets, identified by a label put in each packet, thus saving the time needed for a router to look up the address to the next node to forward the packet to.

14 MPLS  MPLS is called multiprotocol because it works with the Internet Protocol, Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM), and frame relay network protocols.  MPLS allows most packets to be forwarded at the layer 2 (switching) level rather than at the layer 3 (routing) level.  MPLS makes it easy to manage a network for quality of service (QoS). For these reasons, the technique is expected to be readily adopted as networks begin to carry more and different mixtures of traffic.
