Westward Expansion from 1810 -1860 During the fifty years between 1810 and 1860, the United States grew tremendously. There were many causes for the growth of the nation including war, purchases, annexations, negotiations, and forceful move outs. The concept of Manifest Destiny was instrumental in much of the expansion.

Important Concept Manifest Destiny A policy of imperialistic expansion defended as necessary or benevolent. The 19th-century doctrine that the United States had the right and duty to expand throughout the North American continent. Critical Thinking: What group of people were hurt the most by this way of thinking? What do you think happened to their way of life? Be ready to explain.

Assignment # 1 On the blank outline map provided, you will illustrate the Westward Expansion of the United States. Use the direction sheet to appropriately identify and label key components. This will be done in assigned groups of three. All group members are responsible for completing all assignments. The United States of America

You will then read and analyze an excerpt regarding Manifest Destiny and answer questions based on it with your group members. (Part I and II) 3. Part III will be completed individually for homework. 4. You will participate in a whole class discussion based on the above.
