Go to: http://www.history.com/content/universe/the-universe-video Click on: “The Universe: Backyard Astronomer - Phases of the Moon” Answer the following questions as you watch the short video: 1.What is the period of moon phase cycle? 2.Which ancient cultures used for time keeping? 3.What re the moon's 4 main phases? 4.When the moon is appear to be growing, it is ______ and getting smaller, it is _________. 5.When the Sun, Earth & the moon line up and moon moved in earth’s shadow we observe this event as ________.

Lunar Phases Sidereal period of the Moon: ____________ Synodic period of the Moon: ____________ Synchronous rotation Next slide: animation -discuss time and phases

“start animation” to start the lunar phase simulator. This will help you understand why we observe different phases of the moon.

Answer the following questions using the program on the previous page. 1.What is the period of the lunar phases changes? 2.Use the animation to go to first quarter moon (right half illuminated). How many days after the new moon did this occur? 3.Use the increment animation: hour to find the rising time & setting time of the first quarter moon. 4.Use the animation to go to full moon (entire visible moon is illuminated). How many days after the new moon did this occur? 5.Use the increment animation: hour to find the rising time & setting time of full moon.

The phases of the Moon Synchronous Rotation

THE THREE TYPES OF LUNAR ECLIPSES PENUMBRAL = the Moon appears dimmed. PARTIAL = part of the Moon enters the umbra of the Earth’s shadow and is darkened. TOTAL = all of the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow and becomes a reddish color, only lit from light bending around the Earth’s atmosphere. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon moves in and out of the umbra of the Earth’s shadow.

SOLAR ECLIPSES occur when the moon’s shadow reaches the earth. Solar eclipse

Eclipse does not happen every month. Plane of orbit of the Moon and the earth is off by 5 degrees.

Saros Cycle Solar eclipse

1.T /F The moon goes though different phases because the Moon is emitting different amount of light at different time. 2.Phase cycle of the moon is: a) One earth day, b)27 1/3 days, c) 29 1/2days, d)365 ¼ days 3.When the Moon move in the earth’s shadow, you see: A) solar eclipse, b) lunar eclipse, c) new moon, d) full moon 4.When you compare the totality of the eclipse: a) Solar eclipse is generally longer, b) lunar eclipse is generally longer, c) length of totality varies. some times the solar eclipse is longer and visa versa, d) Solar eclipse is longer if you scarifies better goods to the Sun god.
