The Plan In-Class Mini-Lesson Redesign Essay Assignments Utilize Peer Review Process
5
Mini-Lesson In 3 minutes, list all the different kinds of writing you’ve done. In 3 minutes, list all the different people you’ve ever written to. Build list on board. Discussion: How does the way you write change based on who you’re writing to? Activity requires students to pull an audience from a “hat” to write a group letter convincing someone to lend them $20.

Sample Assignment

Sample Peer Review

Challenges Not all essays present an obvious audience. Students are more skilled in writing to some audiences than others. Artificiality of assignments: Students still know they’re writing for me, for a grade. What happens when they get to their next class and their professor does not specify an audience?
9
Next Semester Introduce concept of audience on first day of class. Implement more in-class activities that require writing to a variety of different audiences. Revise (some) assignments to create a more specific audience. Create an actual audience – Class blog? Class literary journal? Create at least one assignment that does not explicitly identify an audience.
