2005 STAV/AIP Physics Teachers Conference It is wrong to think that the task of physics is to find out how Nature is. Physics concerns what we say about Nature. Niels Bohr

Conference News w What’s in your folder? Program and evaluation sheet Map showing location of venues Survey questions on class time in physics Free rainbow poster from the AIP Flyer for Switch On To Physics Flyer on Physics Gymnasium Assorted commercial flyers If this sticker is blue, you're driving too fast

Addition to the Program Maria James, recently appointed Science Manager at VCAA, will speak for a few minutes before The Examiner’s Report. She will describe the administrative aspects of VCE Physics in 2005.

Room Changes A3 session from PL1 to PL4 A10 session from S2 to S4 A13 session from PL4 to PL1 B3 session from S2 to S4 Note: The rooms W204, W210 and W214 on the West of the 2 nd floor, not near the top of the building as the map suggests. The more success the quantum theory has, the sillier it looks. Albert Einstein - 1912

Physics Survey “Class-time on Physics” Please complete the questions on “class-time on Physics” on the survey sheet in your folder and hand it in at the end of the morning session. One does not, by knowing all the physical laws as we know them today, immediately obtain an understanding of anything much.- Richard Feynman

Conference News Want to find out who is teaching in your neighbouring schools?,who is doing the same Detailed Study (1 & 2 only)? Then check the participant list* (Excel file sorted by postcode) on our vicphysics.org website. *Last year’s list. This year’s is not available. Physics is like sex, it produces valuable results, but that is not why we do it. - Richard Feynman

Physics Days at Luna Park Monday, 28 th Feb, Tuesday 1 st March are fully booked. Bookings are being taken for Wed, 2 nd March. Another 80 students are needed before Wednesday proceeds. Cost $19.50 per student. Open from 10am until 2pm. Worksheets / videos are available at www.vicphysics.org Ring Luna Park on 9525 5033 to book. 100 schools can’t be wrong!

Support for “Synchrotron” D.S. The AIP Education Committee has purchased several copies of the award winning CD-ROM “Exploring Matter with Synchrotron Light” produced by the European Synchrotron Research Facility (ESRF). Cost $50. Send order with cheque to AIP Education Committee, PO Box 304, Glen Waverley, 3150 I know that this defies the law of gravity but, you see, I never studied law. - Bugs Bunny

A New Feature on the website: A Physics Email Digest w Enables physics teachers to share and discuss ideas, find answers to queries, without being flooded by emails, w You receive one email of summaries, rather than several emails, then just select the item that interests you to read further, w You choose how often this email comes, w You choose how detailed the summaries are, w You choose from which categories you will receive the email. Physics: Know your world to change your world

A Physics Email Digest How do I join? w Go to www.vicphysics.org, select “Forum”www.vicphysics.org w Select “Register” and enter your details, nominate a password and an identifier. You will get a confirming email shortly after. w Select “Subscribe to email digests” and make your selection of preferences, w Then contribute a query.

Switch On To Physics w An event promoting physics to Year 10 students supported by AIP w Students each construct, use and take home two scientific devices w Held at a University campus with university staff and students as supervisors w See flyer in your folder. Physics is great - 40 orders of magnitude can’t be wrong

Where can I find the slogans at the bottom of the slides? Check our website www.vicphysics.org www.vicphysics.org and select “Careers”. Over 50 slogans available My goal is simple. It is complete understanding of the universe, why it as it is and why it exists at all. - Stephen Hawking

Physics Gymnasium w Stimulating lectures and events for students w Held monthly beginning at 5.00pm at Melbourne University. Note: New time w Weds, 23 rd Feb A/Prof Lloyd Hollenberg The frontiers of physics and the limits of knowledge w Weds 20 th April Prof Rachel Webster. The Structure of the Universe X-rays will prove to be a hoax. Lord Kelvin

AIP Education Committee What do they do? w Check the white survey sheet for details. w Meetings this year at Northland Secondary College, 8th March, 12th April, …, 5pm – 7pm. w Teachers are encouraged to attend, contact Peter Hubber, chair, phubber@deakin.edu.au Stand on the shoulders of giants - get a physics degree

AIP Education Committee Physics News by Email An electronic newsletter is sent to over 400 physics teachers at least once a term. To be a recipient, email Dan O’Keeffe at danok@bigpond.com danok@bigpond.com Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible. Lord Kelvin

Physics Youth Lectures w A series of 3 lectures for regional students. This year’s lecturer, venues and dates are yet to be determined. Check your Physics Email News regularly. Radio has no future. - Lord Kelvin

AIP Women in Physics Lecture w Prof Helen Quinn, an Australian working at Stanford, will give a public lecture on “The Mystery of Missing Antimatter”. w Her lecture will be held at 6:30pm on Friday, 25th February at Elisabeth Murdoch Building Theatre A, University of Melbourne. w Invite your Year 11 and 12 students. A physicist is an atom's way of knowing about atoms. George Wald
