1 Section 3. Eating For Health For Use with the KS2 Science Curriculum Topic 3A Adapted by Healthy Teeth Devon, 2014

2 Diet does not mean thin The word diet is often misused in magazines and on the TV. Eating too little, or deliberately not eating one type of food can lead to illness. For optimum health we should eat a balanced diet. A selection of foods from all the sections of the Eatwell plate.

5 Unhealthy eating Eating too much of the wrong groups can lead to ill health. Too much fat and sugar = obesity. Too much sugar = tooth decay. Eating too little of some groups can lead to a lack of vitamins or minerals.

6 Why is a healthy diet important ? For good health. To help maintain a healthy body weight. To enhance general well being. To reduce the risks of a number of diseases including ; heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

7 Different cultures Indian Italian Mexican Spanish American Chinese Greek French German Vegetarian Vegan Can you name the foods shown on the following slides ? You may have had them in a restaurant or seen them on holiday.

17 Vegetarian food Some vegetarians will also eat milk, cheese, other milk products and eggs.

18 Vegan food Vegans will not eat any animal products at all. No milk, dairy, or yoghurt. No eggs. No honey. No jelly ( gelatine ). No cheese ( rennet ). They will not wear leather, fur, wool or silk.
