6 Enzo De Sanctis: UE-FP7-TMD network ECT*-Trento, June 15, 2007 6 The knowledge of correlations of transverse momentum of partons and spin is crucial for the understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon in terms of the quark and gluon degrees of freedom of QCD. Recent progress in understanding the role of partonic initial and final state interactions lead to introduction of gauge-invariant transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions, generalizing the standard parton distributions to describe also their distributions in transverse momentum. TMDs are recognized as an important part of representation of the nucleon in terms of Wigner distributions containing the most general one-body information on proton structure, and are complementary to GPDs describing spatial distributions of partons. The information on spin-orbit correlations, together with independent measurements related to the spin and orbital angular momentum of the quarks will help construct a more complete picture about the spin structure of the nucleon going beyond the simple collinear partonic representation. A large body of theoretical work on TMDs in the last decade, and new high performance facilities and high luminosity particle accelerators nowadays allow one to explore such intriguing though complicated objects experimentally. TMD-Net: Scientific case

7 Enzo De Sanctis: UE-FP7-TMD network ECT*-Trento, June 15, 2007 7 For decades the partonic structure of the nucleon was almost entirely discussed in terms of unpolarized and polarized forward parton densities, which merely depend on the longitudinal momentum of the respective parton. A much more comprehensive picture of the nucleon structure can be obtained by considering the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) entering the description of various semi- inclusive reactions. A large body of theoretical work on these types of parton correlators appeared during the last decade, and also new high performance detectors and high luminosity particle accelerators nowadays allow one to explore such intriguing though complicated objects experimentally. Novelty in the continuity

8 Enzo De Sanctis: UE-FP7-TMD network ECT*-Trento, June 15, 2007 8 Theory: sound base developed for description of single-spin asymmetries which involve TMD distribution and fragmentation functions. Prove of universatility of such functions appearing in SIDIS, Drell-Yan and e + e - processes. Experiment: key measuremens performed with transverely polarized targets at HERMES and COMPASS. transversity and Collins fragmentation functions are non zero Sivers function is non zero (role of orbital angular momentum of parton!) Theory+Experiment: first extraction of transversity, Collins and Sivers functions from data and model calculations. First global analysis: simultaneous fit of all available data. Successfully completed goals of N7
