FAMILY LIFE Changes in family-life during the 1980s: young people were remaining longer in education women were taking higher studies education and employment trends contributed to the postponement of marriage the marriage rate was declining the proportion of all new mothers who were in their late thirties increased the fertility rate continued its downward slide the divorce rate peaked mothers moving into paid work required changes in arrangements for the care of the children But: the families remained the basic unit of society families played a central role in shaping the health and wellbeing of all immediate family members
