Not long after the English colonies of north America the Dutch began to construct settlements of their own By 1626 peter minuet was govern of new Netherlands The Dutch bought Manhattan island from the Indians that lived there The Indian ideas about land weren’t the same of those of settlers

By 1630 new Amsterdam had about 200 people in 30 houses It also had a counting house where workers could keep track of furs and money and house for storing food and fur. For protection the colonists built a wall with big blocks of stone.
