INDE 6332 ENGINEERING PROJECT MANAGEMENT Homework Project University of Houston Dept. of Industrial Engineering Houston, TX 77204-4812 (713) 743-4195

AGENDA l Group Homework/Project

YOUR GROUP PROJECT l A series of connected homework projects l Application of most of the concepts covered in class l You will be given time in class to coordinate project efforts l Each team to consist of 4 heterogenous team members l Each week your team will rotate project managers among the group members

PROJECT BACKGROUND l Conduct all the necessary project activities to select and modify a small power boat suitable for conducting daytrip scuba diving charters l Ultimately Determine n What type of boat configuration to select n Identify what components are needed n Identify what resources are needed n Determine the project plan including sequencing n Perform budget and cost estimation n Identify a means of monitoring the project progress n Etc. l Will need to use the Internet to perform project research

INITIAL PROJECT DESIGN DECISIONS l Size… l Hull material… l Engine… l Layout… l Many other design decisions, but we have to draw the line somewhere

SIZE l What size? l Must be big enough to conduct operations n Minimum capacity is 2 crew and 6 passengers l Popular range of sizes for these types of boats n 28-38 feet l Bigger is more expensive to buy and cost more to berth and maintain

ENGINE l HP? n Appropriate for the boat size n Bigger engines costs more and uses up more fuel n Fuel tank size l Type of engine? n Outboard Gasoline - cheaper, external obstruction n Inboard Gasoline - cheaper to buy n Inboard Diesel – safer, more durable, cheaper to run l Number of engines? n Single-weigh less, consume less fuel n Twin- more reliable

ENGINE Gasoline Outboard Gasoline Inboard or Diesel Inboard

HULL MATERIAL l Which material? l Fiberglass n Cheapest material and easiest to make n Blisters, but does not corrode n Easy to repair l Aluminum n Most costly material and most difficult to make n Does not blister, but can corrode n Difficult to repair l Steel n More costly material and more difficult to make n Heavy – can only build larger boats n Does not blister, but corrodes n Easy to repair

LAYOUT DESIGN l Determine cabin and cockpit spaces l Cabin and cockpit sizes are complementary l Percentage of each? l What is needed in each…

LAYOUT DESIGN l Cabin n Protection from elements n Head – fresh water system l Cockpit n Equipment preparation area n Benches n Tank holders n Shower n Ladder
