1 The Seven Sides of Leadership

2 Session Learning Objectives
Have a little fun. Reflect a little. Remember – It’s all about the connections we make with the population we associate with!

3 Overview Only when you make the ordinary extraordinary will others see the possibilities for themselves. You choose: Which do you prefer; Enjoyment or misery? Feeling good about your work or feeling bad? Being yourself or hiding the real you? The person doing the work determines the difference between the mundane and the magnificent. Always do your best at being yourself. The prerequisite for relationship building is trust. At its most basic level, trust is built on believing that people are who they represent themselves to be.

4 Communication, Team Building, & Collaboration
The “real” title of this session But what is “it” really about? Making connections with others! Doesn’t matter whether it is the children we serve, or the adult colleagues we work with.

5 What’s it matter what we call “it”?

6 Shouldn’t “It” Always Be About the Children? (Vision! – Side One)
Covey’s 2nd habit  begin with the end in mind Keeps you focused Keeps you fueled. (energy & passion) Helps you finish Leadership is ALWAYS about results. – Peter Drucker

7 Stand for what you Believe! (Communicate – Side Two)
Communicate Your Vision. Communicate optimism No one will follow a pessimist Communicate hope Communicate inspiration and motivation Talk about it in front of other people

8 People Skills – Side Three
Have a heart & love for people Be visible and available Listen (Did you – Do you - realize that listen & silent contain the exact same letters?) Empower Delegate – preparing the next generation of leaders

9 Side Four – Character Counts (sometimes we get confused)
Honesty Tell the truth in every situation Middle of the plate truth, don’t paint the black Integrity You either have it or you don’t There is nothing less that 100% Humility Humble under spirit Like underwear, everyone has/needs it, don’t let it show!

10 Stay the Course! (Side Five – Competence & Side Six – Boldness)
Good at what you do Must be a problem solver Do it with a TEAM Non-stop sales person Life-long teacher life-long learner  life-long reader Read one hour – everyday – for the rest of your life Newspapers, magazines, romance novels, etc. do not count Boldness Make the decision – Move on – Don’t look back Be the Boss, not Be a Boss You only get one shot, one crack at this leadership thing

Servants Heart (Serving Heart) Not meant to dominate, but to serve other people It’s not about me, it’s about others

12 5 Things on which to Reflect
Recognize people who demonstrate good citizenship. Not everyone has the ability to be an “A” person. Everyone does have the ability to become an “A” citizen. Build’s everyone’s self-esteem, especially the average or struggling person who doesn’t get the pats on the back that some receive.

13 5 Things on which to Reflect
Meet people in the hallways. Get to know them. Sets the tone for the day/hour/class period. Maintain a positive-reinforcement self-esteem checklist. Concerted effort to compliment every person individually at least once a week. Use the check-list to see if you are missing anyone in particular.

14 5 Things on which to Reflect
Don’t let anyone fall through the cracks. Periodically review and mentally ask yourself if you know each person. If you are connecting with each person. If you are meeting his/her needs. Patience, kindness, confidence, and high expectations work wonders. Establishes an environment for learning. Start each day with a plan. Organization leads to productivity. As a parent, never let your child leave home thinking you’re angry with them. As a teacher/administrator, never let a child leave for home thinking the same.

15 Helen Keller “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” Never criticize the person, only criticize the actions. It takes patience to teach some, even most, kids and/or adults. When you give up on a child/person/anyone, you give up on a human being. Sometimes it takes A LOT of patience to change a life.
