2 1. Big picture D. Klem 2 Purpose of Training has twofolds As defined in the SR&R :(SII 3.01) ‘The purpose of training shall be to: a) maintain, update and develop the competencies needed for the performance of present and future functions; b) facilitate integration into the Organization’s activities, the work environment and the local area; c) dispense the knowledge needed to implement safety measures; d) facilitate mobility or reintegration.’

Klem 3 Purpose of Training has twofolds Evolution of CERN’s objectives Change of functions for staff For supervisors to identify current staff skills For supervisors to define gap between current and desired performances For supervisors to set up priorities for the development of their staff

4 D. Klem 4 Training Needs What are the benefits for the department? (on the short term – for the year) Training needs priority will be determined and become apparent Training will be planned ahead of time but flexible to allow ad hoc requests Ensure courses are given rapidly and on time Allow reviewing of existing courses Plan the cost evaluation of training

5 D. Klem 5 Training Needs – Short Term For supervisors to identify key learning priorities: - What are your group goals for next year? For supervisors to identify how to meet those goals: - What are the new tasks? - What are the new skills required to do these tasks well? - Which skills are essential to your group? For supervisors to identify the skills needed: - Identifying competencies that the members of a group need to develop to meet the department goals. - Set up Learning objectives
