5 Passcode/New User New users will enter our school’s unique 8- digit Passcode. Click the Login button to set up your account. Existing users log in with their username and password. New users click on the second tab Passcode/New User.

7 From the homepage, you can search for digital media by keyword, subject, grade level, media pack, or curriculum standards streaming Homepage

8 The video search results page includes a thumbnail image, title, number of segments, and video length. “Roll over” the title for more information. Video Search Results

9 To view, click the “Play” button. To save, right click the “Download” button and select “Save Target As”, or add the file to your “My Content” libraries. The More to Explore section includes more relevant content. Full Video Description Length, number of segments, and full description is included for each. Note the content rating.

10 Video Segments divide the video into short segments that can be streamed or downloaded for use when only a small portion of the video is needed. Video Segments

11 Related Materials When you click the “Related Materials” tab, you will see links to a variety of resources including Teacher Guides and Blackline Masters.

12 The “Citations” tab displays the essential information in three accepted formats. Copy the data from this page and paste it into your presentation and lesson files. Citations and More The “More in this Series” tab displays other videos from this company in the same series

13 The Media Settings controls are located directly under the viewer and give you the ability to enable the closed caption text display and select the media player you prefer to use to stream or download a video. You will get better quality images when downloading at 700 Kbps. Media Settings

14 My Content My Content is the space you can save and organize your “playlist”. It can be accessed at any time by clicking on the My Content tab at the top right corner of the screen.

15 You can organize, assign, delete, and share resources with colleagues by clicking “Select” in the Action column. My Content

16 Sharing Content You may share with the School or District and you may add the item in an existing folder or create a new one.

17 School and District Content To navigate to School and District Content, click on the tabs to the right of My Content.

18 The Teacher Center contains a variety of resources and tools. Teacher Center Navigate to the Teacher Center by clicking the button at the top left on your screen.

19 The Calendar tool is a great way to locate videos that are associated with important events in history, prominent people, and holidays. Calendar

20 Lesson Plan Library Choose from over hundreds of lesson plans created to accompany videos in the DE streaming library. The lessons can be downloaded or added to My Content, and most are available in both PDF and Microsoft Word formats.

21 Each week, a new Thematic Focus is posted on the site and each unit includes discussion guides, lesson plans, media links, student activities, and related materials. Thematic Focus Themes

22 Featuring clips from Discovery's ATLAS series, this interactive map provides thousands of videos that show the wonders of countries ranging from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Zoom in to each country and learn about its culture, government, history, and the natural world. Atlas

23 My Builder Tools My Builder Tools is located at the top right corner. Use this option to create customized assignments, quizzes, and writing prompts.

24 With the Assignment Builder, you can create online activities that feature videos that you select from the DE library. Students visit the Student Center to access these materials. Assignment Builder

25 With the Quiz Builder, you can modify existing quizzes or create your own online assessments using the DE library. Quiz Builder

27 With My Classrooms, you can build and manage your classrooms and assignments. Students visit the Student Center to access these materials. My Classrooms My Classrooms can be found in the top right corner.

28 No video editing software is permitted except for those titles that have been designated as “Editable Content.” Students are allowed to keep projects containing video segments in their electronic portfolios if used for demonstration purposes. Teachers may keep video files and projects on disks and servers as long as the Discovery Education streaming subscription is current. Protect the content, especially when creating web pages, so that only subscribers are able to see the video files. Converting digital video to analog format such as VHS cassettes is not allowed—only digital devices may be used. 29 Each minute of downloaded video will require about 1.8 Mb of storage space on hard drives or other storage media. A building with a dedicated T-1 line could accommodate 6 users Discovery Education streaming video with no buffering assuming no other users. Home users with 56k modems can easily search and use support materials; downloads are possible but will be slow. Windows Media Player (version 10) and Apple QuickTime Player (version 6) are recommended for best results. Minimum screen resolution should be set at 800 x 600; you will get better results if you set screen resolution at 1024 x 768. You may need to install updated “codecs” if the media player is not properly playing the audio or video components. Technology Information to Know Tech Tips

31 Creating Account www.youtube.com Click “Create Account” in the top right corner. This allows you to create and manage a “Playlist”.

32 Setting Up Account Fill out the online form and click “I accept” at the bottom.

35 Options When you find a good video, you can add it to your favorites, share it, add it to your playlist, or flag it. I would recommend adding to favorites.

36 Favorites To access your favorites, click the down arrow to the right of your username and select “Favorites”

37 Downloading Fair Use guidelines allow educators to use video with 10 days of recording, but then it must be deleted. Please use good judgment. To download videos, type the word “kick” before youtube in the web address.

38 Kick YouTube Click the format you want the downloaded video to be in and click “GO”. I recommend MP4.

39 Saving Right click the blue “Down” button and select “Save Target As”. Save the video in the location of your choice.
