3 Let’s find out what the words mean! Open your books to page 42 and take a picture walk. Pay attention to the headings and the pictures. Read the captions below the pictures.

4 Vocabulary – Write the following words in the back of your packet. Producer Herbivore Omnivore Decomposer Food web Consumer Carnivore Scavenger Food chain Energy pyramid

5 Partner Work With a partner, define the vocabulary words. You may use the glossary or the chapter to do this. You have about 20 minutes to complete this.

6 Vocabulary Check Producer: organisms that makes its own food. Herbivore: organisms that eat only plants Omnivore: organisms that eat plants AND animals Decomposer: organism that breaks down waste and dead organisms Food Web: consist of overlapping food chains

7 Vocabulary Check Continued Consumer: organisms that eat other organisms for food Carnivore: eats only meat Scavenger: eats other dead animals Food Chain: series of events where one organism eats another to obtain energy Energy Pyramid: Diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web.
