2. 1. What did 500 of Buddha’s followers do shortly after he died? Why?  They gathered together shortly after he died, to ensure that his teachings were remembered correctly.

3. 2. Why did Buddhism spread quickly?  Buddhism spread quickly because Buddhist teachings were popular and easy to understand.

4. 3. What was the first written work about Buddha’s teachings? Why was it important?  The first written work of Buddha’s teachings was the Buddha Caharita or the Life Of Buddha. It was important because it told the life experiences of Buddha.

5. 4. Who was Asoka? How did Asoka help spread Buddhism?  Asoka was an important king who believed in Buddhism. Asoka built temples and schools through out India. He worked to spread Buddhism out of India. Missionaries were used to spread the word of Buddhism through out India. One group of missionaries traveled on boats to Sri Lanka

6. 5. What are some places to which Buddhism spread?  Buddhism spread to Central Asia, Persia, Syria, Egypt, China, Korea, and Japan.

7. 6. How did Buddhism spread from India to other parts of Asia?  Missionaries introduced Buddhism to Lands of western India. The Silk Road also helped Buddhism travel from India to other parts of Asia.

8. 7. What are the groups into which Buddhism split?  Buddhism split into multiple groups or schools each with its own variation of Buddhist teachings. Some of these schools included the Theravada, Pure Land, Zen, and Tantra. These schools are called Mahayana Buddhism.
