2 About the Author: S.E. Hinton= Susan Eloise Hinton. She tried to conceal her female identity so she would not alienate male readers. Born in Tulsa, OK in 1950; lived there most of her life. Began writing The Outsiders at age 15; it was published when she was 17. Received a D in her creative writing class while composing the book. Wrote about what she saw around her; The Outsiders was inspired by the beating of one of her greaser friends.
