Activity STRESS SURVEY! Fill out the survey as it pertains to your life. 1. Place the number from the left in the blank to the right if the event has occurred in the past year. 2. Multiply the number if the event has occurred more than once in the past year.

Stress Stressor - A situation/event that triggers physical & emotional reactions. Eustress - Stress triggered by a pleasant stressor Examples: First date, Wedding Distress - Stress triggered by an unpleasant stressor Examples: Taking a test, Family member death

General Adaptation Syndrome 3 Stages 1.) Alarm: fight or flight reaction Adrenaline is released Body is prone to injury / disease Headaches, indigestion, anxiety, mood swings, appetite changes, etc

General Adaptation Syndrome 2.) Resistance Body begins to cope with the added stress Uses much energy to maintain “normal” functioning 3.) Exhaustion Mental & Physical Once stressor is removed

How to deal with stress 1.) Talk it out 2.) Escape for a While 3.) Exercise (#1 stress reliever) 4.) Work off your anger 5.) Make a List / Write it out

How to deal with stress 6.) Don’t be a perfectionist - Try to set attainable goals 7.) Do something for others - Can be self- rewarding and make your stressors seem minimal. 8.) Schedule some recreation/leisure time 9.) Don’t worry (especially over things you don’t have control over)

Suicide More females attempt suicide (That is b/c they often use pills) More males complete suicide (That is b/c they often use weapons) More than 1/2 of all youth suicides involve the use of alcohol

Suicide Statistics On average 85 suicides occur each day in the United States (signs are very similar to depression) 90% of the time they will tell someone About 95% of people don’t want to die. They want their pains to go away and they don’t know how to do it. Approximately 30,000 people commit suicide each year.

Signs to look for: They talk about suicide * Give away prized possessions * Take unnecessary risks Withdrawn from friends & activities Lose interest in appearance Sudden positive changes in attitude following depression * * = unique to suicide specifically

How to Help Talk to them—listen carefully! Ask Direct Questions: 1.) Are you thinking about suicide? 2.) Do you have a plan? Tell someone (trusted adult) Dispose of the means (pills, weapon, etc.) Get them to call help lines Take all threats seriously
