Vocabulary List #3: The Giver 1.admonition (n): a warning. Example: The teacher gave me an admonition for talking to my friend during instruction. 2.assimilate (v): to absorb or digest information. Example: I tried to assimilate all of the classroom rules so that I wouldnt get a detention for breaking them. 3.assuage (v): to relieve, soothe or lessen. Example: We tried everything to try and assuage the baby, but it continued to cry all night long. 4.conspicuous (adj): obvious, easily seen. Example: The location of the party was very conspicuous because the front door was marked with a bunch of balloons and a big sign.

5.dismay (n): a strong feeling of disappointment. Example: He felt great dismay at not having been chosen for the golf team. 6.integral (adj.): essential, necessary. Example: Concentration is an integral part of being a good chess player. 7.obsolete (adj.): no longer in use. Example: I can no longer play my 8-track tapes because the 8-track tape player has become obsolete in modern society. 8.phenomenon (n): an exceptional occurrence. Example: Falling stars are a phenomenon that can not be seen very often.

9.successor (n): a person who replaces another. Example: Since Lance Armstrong has retired, we wonder who will be his successor as champion of the Tour de France. 10.imploring (v): begging. Example: Sue was imploring her parents to let her attend the dance, but they refused since her grades were not what they had expected.
