2 Word List #5 1.indomitable adj.: unconquerable. Example: The Witlow family felt that they were indomitable and therefore took many unwise risks. 2.annihilation n.: complete destruction. Example: A recent tornado caused the total annihilation of every house on the block except the Witlows, which was miraculously untouched. 3.refuge n.: place of safety. Example: Because the Witlows feel indestructible, they feel no need to seek refuge when danger approaches.

3 4.reconciliations n.: acts of making up after arguments. Example: The Witlows frequently fought, but there were also many reconciliations. 5.inexplicable adj.: incapable of being explained. Example: Their neighbors found it inexplicable how Jane Witlow wrestled alligators. 6.dispirited adj.: sad and discouraged. Example: John Witlow felt dispirited when his wife got more fame for her bravery, so he decided to take on alligators too.

4 7.premonition n.: feeling that something bad will happen. Example: Jane had a haunting premonition of doom when cousin Bernie Witlow decided to begin challenging bears. 8.emaciated adj.: extremely thin, as from starvation or illness. Example: Jane worried that Bernie may meet a hungry emaciated bear that had not eaten in many weeks. 9.raucous adj.: loud and rough. Example: Sure enough, one day Bernie heard the raucous growling of a starving bear outside of his camper. He decided to take a picture.

5 10.clamorous adj.: loud and demanding. Example: The clamorous growls of the bear seemed to insist that Bernie hand over his cooler full of baloney sandwiches. 11.tersely adv.: briefly and clearly. Example: From the safety of a nearby tree, Bernie tried to tersely explain to the bear that he was a Witlow and therefore impenetrable to danger. 12.laconically adv.: with few words. Example: The bear answered laconically, Baloney!

6 13.breach n.: opening. When Bernie saw a breach between him and the bear he decided to make a run for it. 14.riveted v.: fastened; held firmly. Example: The bear quickly gave chase; his eyes were riveted on Bernies fleeing backside. 15.vigil n.: watch. Example: Now Jane and John Witlow keep vigil over Uncle Bernies grave every weekend.
