3. Why this law was passed… More than 100 deaths were caused because of a sulfanilamide medication. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act is based on the publication Compilation of Selected Acts Within the Jurisdiction of the Committee on Energy and Commerce; Food, Drug, and Related Law. This law set tolerances, or maximum residue limits, for pesticide residues on foods.
