SCENARIO Imagine you go to an after-school program. You get there, and all you want to do is hang out. But nooo! The adult director wants everyone to do their homework right when they arrive. This feels like a constant battle, and everyone’s tired of it! It’s time to find a win-win solution. In a win-win solution, there are no losers in the disagreement. You find a solution that makes both people feel like they’ve “won.” Sound good? It is! Go through the following steps with an adult to see if you come up with your own “win-win” solution to the homework battle.

POST-Reflection 7th A.When solving a problem, why is it important to analyze the situation? B.Why is it important to find a win-win solution? C.Think about a problem you are having with someone and develop a neutral problem statement about it.

CAN YOU FIND A “UNITED” SOLUTION? The United Nations (UN) was founded in 1945 after World War II. Its job is to maintain peace and stability through international cooperation. It is composed of more than 190 countries from around the world. Each student in the group represents a different country, creating a “mini UN.” Choose an international, national, local, or schoolwide problem (for example, global warming, emission laws, rules you don’t like or lack of recycling). Each mini UN needs to come up with a “united” plan using the Action Steps to solve the problem. Each individual in a group must ensure that his or her country’s perspective is being heard and included in the final plan. Write down your plan and how you used the steps to solve it.

Discussion I. How would considering the other person’s perspective help you avoid making ASSUMPTIONS? II. What do you think will happen as a result of Vanessa’s attitude? III. When have you experienced this kind of situation? Describe yours. IV. How could having an open mind and a positive attitude help you when talking about a problem with someone? V. Make a list of the ways that Vanessa communicated DIFFERENTLY in Part 2. VI. What did Vanessa do before she returned to the Ladies Room to talk to Lisa? Did it work? VII. Why does it help or why is it important to avoid blaming language?

What does open-mindedness have to do with it? It allowed them to act better. It allowed them to understand each other’s perspective. They quit blaming and started listening. They calmed down.

Media Literacy SPEAKING OF CONFLICTS AND GRIEVANCES... Does too much exposure to media violence decrease empathy for the victims? By the time kids enter middle school, they will have seen 8,000 murders and 100,000 more acts of violence on broadcast TV alone. 2 How do you think seeing violence on TV affects our empathy for victims of violence? What kinds of examples do violent programs give us for handling disputes and grievances? Do you think that modeling non-aggressive handling of grievances and disputes in the media can help decrease violence and aggressive behavior? Why or why not?

http://www.youtube.com/user/unitednations?feature=results_main http://www.un.org/en/aboutun/index.shtml The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well- being of all people. It affords the opportunity for countries to balance global interdependence and national interests when addressing international problems. There are currently 192 Members of the United Nations. They meet in the General Assembly, which is the closest thing to a world parliament. Each country, large or small, rich or poor, has a single vote, however, none of the decisions taken by the Assembly are binding. Nevertheless, the Assembly's decisions become resolutions that carry the weight of world governmental opinion.

The Aims of the United Nations: To keep peace throughout the world. To develop friendly relations between nations. To work together to help people live better lives, to eliminate poverty, disease and illiteracy in the world, to stop environmental destruction and to encourage respect for each other's rights and freedoms. To be a center for helping nations achieve these aims.

The Principles of the United Nations: A.All Member States have sovereign equality. B.All Member States must obey the Charter. C.Countries must try to settle their differences by peaceful means. D.Countries must avoid using force or threatening to use force. E.The UN may not interfere in the domestic affairs of any country. F.Countries should try to assist the United Nations.
