All numbers and figures in this paper are based on register data for the total population 2004 from the National Danish Bureau of Statistics.

14 2008 EAIR Forum 2008 14 Findings The graduates from IHA are doing well in the labour market. A Bachelors Degree in engineering is a good road to interesting jobs and higher salary compared to other groups of graduates. Almost half of the engineers work in manufacturing, close to one third in private service. Other bigger sectors are construction and trade (table 1). Especially in Jutland, the western part of Denmark, many of these practical engineers are employed in small and medium size companies.

15 2008 EAIR Forum 2008 15 Findings II About 11 % work as Managers and more than 80 % at high or medium knowledge level. Only about 5 % work below the level the education is meant for (table 2). There are differences between the different fields of engineering. Production/machine engineers have the highest percentage in management functions, Construction engineers have the biggest share at the highest knowledge level.

16 2008 EAIR Forum 2008 16 Findings III The salaries are higher than the average of people with higher education. Almost half of the graduates earn more than 400.000 Danish kroner per year (table 3). Engineers in the field of electronics enjoy the highest salaries. Almost 20% of the students have a background as educated craftsmen Almost 16% of the students comes from non-academic homes where both parents only accomplished primary school.

17 2008 EAIR Forum 2008 17 Conclusions Using register data tells a lot about the quantitative trends for the Graduates. General education provides quality of life, but employment success is also important. The social as well as the private return is worth measuring. A knowledge account with data on the graduates is a useful tool for students, their parents, the teachers at the institution, the management level and the employers and politicians.
