Has rich/challenging vocabulary Has multiple levels of meaning Has complex structure Requires specific content knowledge One of the key requirements of the Common Core State Standards for Reading is that all students must be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they progress through school. 18

19. + The text exemplars are supplemented by brief performance tasks that further clarify the meaning of the Standards. These sample tasks illustrate specifically the application of the Standards to texts of sufficient complexity, quality, and range. Appendix B

20. + Students (with prompting and support from the teacher) read “Garden Helpers” in National Geographic Young Explorers and demonstrate their understanding of the main idea of the text —not all bugs are bad—by retelling key details. [RI.K.2] Students summarize the plot of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince and then reflect on the challenges facing the characters in the story while employing those and other details in the text to discuss the value of inquisitiveness and exploration as a theme of the story. [RL.5.2] Students compare and contrast the effect Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” has on them to the effect they experience from a multimedia dramatization of the event presented in an interactive digital map, analyzing the impact of different techniques employed that are unique to each medium. [RL.6.7] Students compare George Washington’s Farewell Address to other foreign policy statements, such as the Monroe Doctrine, and analyze how both texts address similar themes and concepts regarding “entangling alliances.” [RI.9–10.9]

21. + CCSS Assessments  In Sept. 2010, the U.S. Department of Education awarded grants to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) to develop state assessments  PARCC is an alliance of 25 states working together to develop a common set of K-12 assessments in English and math anchored in what it takes to be ready for college and careers  PARCC is state-led (Massachusetts Commissioner is Chair) and a subset of PARCC states make up its Governing Board  Florida is fiscal agent for PARCC consortium & a member of the Governing Board  Achieve is the PARCC project manager

22. + Role of the Governing States  Governing States will pilot and field test the assessment system components during the 2011–12, 2012–13 and 2013–14 school years, and administer the new assessment system during the 2014-15 school year  The chief state school officers of the Governing States serve on the PARCC Governing Board and make decisions on behalf of the Partnership on major policies and operational procedures  Governing States will use the results from the PARCC assessments in their state accountability systems
