Shrink Fitting By: Olivia Newton
2
Definition Shrink Fitting-A technique in which pieces of a structure are heated or cooled, employing the phenomenon of thermal expansion, to make a joint.
3
Examples: Thermal expansion of a piece of metallic drainpipe can make a builder fit a cooler piece to it. The adjoined pieces reach the same temperature and the joints are strained and stronger. Fitting an iron strip around the edge or a cartwheel. The strip is then heated and expands around the wheel’s diameter, and is fit around it.
4
Risks Risks when shrink fitting include limits of parts exceeding and parts becoming deformed.
5
Cryogenic Institute of New England At the Cryogenic Institute of New England, they have accomplished many goals involving shrink fitting, with numerous projects.
6
Their Projects Some of their projects they have successfully completed include very large steel pipes, sized at over 24 inches diameter to intricate miniaturized parts.
7
Shrink Fitting It helps us with many different things to date, and it is used everyday to create things, such as jeans.
